Peter Crouch has given Marcus Rashford his backing following a tough end to the 2017-18 season at Manchester United.
The 20-year-old has been the most used player under Jose Mourinho since the Portuguese manager took charge in July 2016, contradicting suggestions he should leave the club in search of game time.
However, the arrival of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in the January transfer window heavily affected Rashford’s role and starts especially were limited in the second half of the season.
Veteran striker Crouch has publicly supported the young forward though and has reminded people of what he has achieved for his age.
In his Daily Mail column, he said: “We can’t forget he’s only 20. He was playing up front for Manchester United at 18 so what he’s achieved so far isn’t really normal.
“Jack Butland always comes back to Stoke after international games raving about the quality of his finishing,” Crouch continued. “He’s had a hard season and I just hope his confidence hasn’t been dented.
“He is such an exciting player – the type who will get you out of your seat.”
Rashford is expected to return to England training on Friday ahead of Monday’s World Cup Group G opener against Tunisia, but it’s likely he’ll have to settle for a place on the bench.
His inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s 23-man squad means it’ll be his first World Cup as a professional and his second major tournament already, after a minimal role under Roy Hodgson at EURO 2016.
