Manchester United target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has reiterated that he is yet to make a decision over his future amid speculation of a move to Old Trafford.
Jose Mourinho pinpointed the Serbia international as an ideal fit in his search for a young box-to-box midfielder but the club has reportedly balked at Lazio’s valuation of the 23-year-old.
His father recently fanned the flames surrounding the midfielder’s future by insisting he would like to see him playing at Juventus.
But Milinkovic-Savic, speaking soon after Serbia’s elimination from the World Cup, made it clear he was yet to make any concrete decision regarding his future.
“I need a little bit of rest now,” he said.
“I’ll return to Rome and I would be happy if I stay at Lazio, as I’m content there and I have a contract.
“I read something different in the papers every day, but I haven’t thought about it yet. First, I’ll rest for a bit, then we’ll see.”
United’s chances of signing a second midfielder have been reduced by news of Fellaini staying at the club but not dashed entirely. Mourinho likes the Belgian for his physical presence and discipline; his search for a young box-to-box midfielder – Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele and Real Madrid’s Mateo Kovacic have been mentioned – suggests the Portuguese is after a different sort of profile.
And Milinkovic-Savic fits the bill perfectly. The only problem – a significant one – is that he will cost north of £100m, which the club is unlikely to shell out given Mourinho’s more immediate determination to sign a left-back and centre-back before pre-season starts.
