Manchester United reportedly have no plans to sign Juventus left-back Alex Sandro this summer amid speculation a deal was close.
Ashley Young acted as Man United’s first-choice left-back for the majority of the 2017-18 season due to Luke Shaw‘s continued failure to impress manager Jose Mourinho.
However, at the age of 32 and not actually being a natural left-back, Young isn’t what United supporters want in the long run and the club have been called to bring in a full-time option this summer.
Sandro was thought to be the leading candidate, but now the Manchester Evening News report that United have gone off the idea of signing him anytime soon due to talk of him signing a new contract with Serie A champions Juventus.
The local newspaper say that a ‘top-level source’ at Old Trafford has revealed that Mourinho still wants a new left-back ahead of the 2018-19 campaign, but only if the right player becomes available.
United’s shortlist for the position is unknown – Danny Rose, Kieran Tierney and Ryan Sessegnon have all been suggested as recent targets – but the club may move for a cheaper alternative, similar to the decision to bring in 19-year-old right-back Diogo Dalot.
Earlier on in the transfer window, plenty of reports, mainly from Italy, claimed that United would announce Sandro as their first signing of the summer ‘within days’ but all of that hype has now gone quiet and a deal looks unlikely.
MEN Sport also report that a left-back, as well as a centre-back and a back-up striker is what is wanted this summer, suggesting that interest in Gareth Bale and another midfielder may not be as strong as many think.
Mourinho is said to see Young and Shaw as ‘OK’ options and has prioritised a new centre-back as he looks to bolster his weak back-line.
