Bernd Leno has revealed what he learned from Jens Lehmann during a training session at Stuttgart a decade ago (via Arsenal.com).
It was a case of one German goalkeeper out, one in on a busy Tuesday at Arsenal this week.
The Gunners unveiled head coach Unai Emery’s new backroom staff and revealed that Jens Lehmann had left the club after just one year on the coaching setup.
One man who did join was Bernd Leno, the 27-year-old German goalkeeper who joined from Bayer Leverkusen.
Leno was interviewed by the club after the announcement of his transfer and was asked who his idols
“When I was a child, Iker Casillas was always my idol, but when I was at Stuttgart, there were many players, like Timo Hildebrand and Jens Lehmann,” Leno told Arsenal.com
“I watched many of Jens’ training sessions to learn from him. So yeah, they were my idols.
“I had some training sessions with him when I was very young, about 16 or 17 years old. Jens Lehmann was around 40 years old and for me, it was very exciting.
“He was so concentrated, so professional and that’s the mentality that you need as a professional goalkeeper.”
If Bernd Leno carries some of the same mentality as Jens Lehmann then that can only be a good thing for Arsenal.
