According to a report in the Daily Mail, Roman Abramovich has rejected a bid from Jim Ratcliffe, Britain’s richest man, to purchase Chelsea Football Club.
Ratcliffe, who owns petrochemicals giant Ineos, put forward his offer to buy the club when he heard that the Russian oligarch could be prepared to sell up due to ongoing visa issues with the Home Office.
The club have refused to comment on the issue, but they have stated that Abramovich is still committed to the team that he has owned since 2003. Approaches from China have also reportedly been rejected.
Ratcliffe, who was awarded a knighthood on Saturday evening for his services to business and investment, owns a Swiss football club already and has more than twice the amount of money that Abramovich has – £21.05 billion.
Abramovich bought Chelsea for a reported £140 million 18 years ago, and since then he has cleared the club of its debts and has spent hundreds of millions, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League in the process.
However, following the crackdown on wealthy Russians living in Britain after the poisoning of Sergei Skirpal and his daughter, Abramovich is finding it difficult to obtain a UK visa. As a result, he applied for and was granted Israeli citizenship. However, he has already been informed that this will not allow him to work in Britain.
Abramovich had been planning to carry out a £1 billion redevelopment program at Stamford Bridge in the next few years, but he has decided against this in retaliation to the way he’s being treated.
However, if the reports are to be believed, it looks like Abramovich isn’t looking to sell Chelsea just yet.
