Manchester United favourite Park Ji-sung has admitted it was good to hear Sir Alex Ferguson regret leaving him out of the Champions League final in 2008.
The South Korean was shockingly not selected by the legendary Scotsman’s decision ended up being the correct one given that the trophy was secured nonetheless.
However, Sir Alex made it a point to publicly admit his regret in leaving out Ji-sung who himself is happy to know that’s how the former manager felt.
The former versatile midfielder was a core part of United’s successful trophy laden years in the late 2000s period but was unfortunately not directly involved in the final.
His hardworking ability as well as natural understanding of the game saw him become a favourite quite quickly and he was even jokingly said to have three lungs.
According to the club’s official website, Park said: “It’s great to hear that and he regrets that [Sir Alex Ferguson on leaving him out of the starting XI]. I know how difficult it must be to make a decision on the final squad.
“I know that’s the hardest task for the manager. Sir Alex had many decisions in his career so, if he said that about me, means it’s impressive for me as well.
“Actually, I watched from the stands and I have mixed feelings. Sometimes, I couldn’t believe I was in the stands but I knew it was the manager’s decision and I needed to follow that.
“But I still kept thinking what should I have done better because I missed the final. There must be some reason to miss the final.
“Generally, I just supported our team, football is a team sport, and I watched the final to follow the team to succeed, achieve great memories and win that great trophy.
“In the end, we won the game and I was still happy as that meant the manager’s decision was correct. I knew I had to improve myself for next time. It was a hard time but that made me even stronger.”
It certainly feels as though Park Ji-sung got the closure he wanted on the final but it’s good to see him not harbour any ill feelings towards Ferguson despite what happened.
The Red Devils current crop of players could do with someone like the former PSV man who now currently works as one of the club’s ambassadors.
