Manchester United are not prepared to meet Lazio’s £100m valuation of midfield target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.
The same journalist has confirmed that Man United have reached an agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk to sign midfielder Fred for £44m.
United are also extremely keen on Milinkovic-Savic, who has enjoyed an excellent campaign at Lazio, with Mourinho personally travelling to Vienna last October to watch him in action for Serbia.
But according to Di Marzio, United have baulked at the prospect of shelling out over £100m for a player who would essentially serve as backup for a midfield trio of Paul Pogba, Fred and Nemanja Matic.
United have clearly prioritised Fred, who looks set to join the club sooner rather than later, over Milinkovic-Savic. His price may have been a factor (£44m for the Brazilian is an excellent deal) as well as the desire to get deals done quickly in what will be a truncated window. Perhaps he fits the profile Mourinho is after better than Milinkovic-Savic.
Regardless, Di Marzio has implied here that United are after two midfielders this summer rather than just Fred.
