Denmark boss Age Hareide has aimed an unnecessarily below the belt dig at Paul Pogba ahead of the World Cup, claiming he only cares about his haircuts.
France, whose World Cup group also contains Australia and Peru, take on Denmark in their final group game in Moscow on June 26.
Pogba’s ever-changing hairstyles have once again infuriated pundits and punters for some reason this season, most notably when he dyed his hair blue and white – which was actually in support of his country during internationals – ahead of the Manchester derby in April.
And Denmark’s boss, presumably to make some headlines through mentioning an actual big name, has brought up the Frenchman’s hair once again.
“He played against Manchester City with his hair dyed blue and white, maybe he’ll have it red and white to play us,” he said. “Does he only think about his haircuts?”
Attacks like this never make sense to me because the implicit admission behind this dig is that Pogba is a player Denmark are worried about. Would Hareide try to rattle, say, Kurt Zouma in the same way?
To resort to dirty tactics, either through public jibes or nasty fouls on the pitch, is to essentially admit that your conventional ways of stopping a player aren’t sufficient. This is why all the best forwards end up on the turf so often in games. Hareide’s dig is no different – but obviously less effective.
