Wayne Rooney has insisted that his overhead kick in the Manchester derby back in 2011 should be considered better than Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent effort.
Former-Manchester United teammate Rio Ferdinand claimed that Rooney’s iconic strike against Man City to win the Reds the game went off the ex-England captain’s shinpads.
Rooney jokingly while being interviewed by former-England Lioness Alex Scott at the U17 European Championships draw at St. George’s Park, with the tournament set to be hosted in England next month.
Ronaldo hit an utterly breathtaking overhead kick against Juventus in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday night. It was a truly stunning piece of skill, with the Portuguese great leaping metres into the air and striking the ball with complete perfection.
”I text Rio and I think it’s actually a harder technique to do it off your shins,” Rooney joked.
“So I’ll go with my own.”
Ferdinand had said on BT Sport that Rooney’s hit “was off his shin pad.”
It’s true, Rooney’s did come off his shin. However, the context of the goal, though of course Ronaldo’s was in a huge European night away from home, gives Rooney’s an even more iconic status.
He had come close to joining City months earlier and handed in a transfer request before being sent to Nike HQ in America by Sir Alex Ferguson to get back on form.
He returned to the side and produced that moment of magic. It’s not a huge debate, because instead most people are, something that is rare in football these days, appreciating both goals for what they are: astonishingly good.
