Petr Cech has revealed the five goalkeepers which he has most looked up to during his career (via Arsenal.com).
Regardless of his current form and place in the team, Petr Cech is still undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers in Premier League history.
The 35-year-old has won almost everything a player can win at club level and holds the record for the highest number of clean sheets in Premier League history.
He is undoubtedly a subject of admiration for many other young goalkeepers today and now, Cech has revealed the five stoppers which he most looks up to.
“I would start with Peter Schmeichel. He was always a huge influence on the team, he made big saves and I think the way he played the game was ahead of his time.
“Second was Edwin van der Sar. The moment Ajax started using him as an extra defender, I realised this was probably the future of the game. It made me think that I need to work on my feet and make sure that if I’m playing in a team that use me like that, I’d be able to cope with it.”
Cech also listed Iker Casillas and Oliver Khan before moving onto the current Juventus goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon.
“He was only 17 when I saw him playing with Parma against Sparta Prague,” Cech continued.
“When you look at someone playing so well at the age of 17, you realise that it’s not always about experience and being a certain age.
“He gave me the motivation to work hard and get my chance, no matter how old I was.”
It’s interesting to learn which players the current stars look up to. Petr Cech has effectively put together a list of the best goalkeepers of the last few decades, a list which he will probably have a place on.
