Mourinho knows he'll be slaughtered if this happens at United

Jose Mourinho has claimed that critics will be ready to “kill” him if he fails to win the FA Cup with Manchester United this season.

Man United booked their place in the final by coming back from one goal down to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on Saturday and will face Chelsea for the famous trophy on May 19 after their 2-0 semi-final win over Southampton on Sunday.

Defeat in the final would confirm a trophyless season for United, despite vast improvements in league form has seen them settled in pole position to finish second in the Premier League, the highest finish since Sir Alex Ferguson’s title-winning retirement in 2013.

Although the team have looked stronger this term, no trophies compared to the two won in 2016-17 is bound to spark backlash and Mourinho is completely ready for it if he is beaten by his previous employers in May: “When I don’t win, you kill me. Because I almost do that all the time, when I don’t do it, you kill me, which you are ready to do if I don’t win the final.”

The Portuguese manager wants to build on the signs of improvement shown this year in the 2018-19 season though, and believes consistency is the key to doing just that.

After the outing at Wembley on Saturday evening, he continued: “We should have probably eight, nine, 10 more points than we have. I think we could have finished this season with 88, 89, 90 points but not acceptable the last defeat [against West Brom], not acceptable the performance at Huddersfield [a 2-1 defeat in October], not acceptable the performance at Newcastle.”

United will be hoping for a strong finish in the league this season with Arsenal up next at Old Trafford, before looking to secure a 13th FA Cup.
