Marcus Rashford has expressed his pride at being the most used Manchester United player since Jose Mourinho’s arrival in 2016.
The youngster made more appearances than any other Man United player over the 2016/17 season (53).
And he featured in every game this season up until missing the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United in February; only three attacking players – Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku – have made more appearances than him this term.
Speaking to the club’s programme, Rashford noted he was unaware of the record and, in a nod towards wanting to remain part of this team amid rumours suggesting otherwise, insisted the collective cause was more important under Mourinho.
“I wasn’t aware of it before I saw it and it’s something to be proud of,” he said.
“But we always want more and we always want to show progression individually and as a team, so the numbers don’t really matter as much as the results do to me.”
Following Guardiola’s humiliation at the hands of Mourinho, a number of journalists have predictably set about ways of dampening the mood of United supporters. And what better way to do that than by claiming a homegrown talent – one of the fan favourites – wants out after a couple of months in and out of the starting XI.
I’m sorry but, try as they might, this angle doesn’t work. Rashford has made 97 appearances under Mourinho, improving his game and maturing as an individual in the process. Anyone who watches United every week will tell you that the Portuguese respects the youngster and wants to involve him. And missing out on a few starting XIs does not change that notion, I’m afraid.
