Manchester United will battle Chelsea over the summer for Watford winger Richarlison, according to reports.
The Brazilian, valued at around £40m, arrived from Fluminense over the summer and has impressed during his opening campaign with a series of skilful, dynamic attacking displays.
Jose Mourinho has emphasised that he wouldn’t look to sign attacking players in the summer but doubt continues to linger over the futures of Anthony Martial and Juan Mata.
And according to the Mirror‘s Mike Walters, Mourinho has taken a liking to the 20-year-old and will launch a bid for him in the summer.
As a general rule, I think, United should not opt for the same players wanted by Chelsea. Their recruitment in the last couple of years have centred around this calibre of player: Ross Barkley, Danny Drinkwater, Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Olivier Giroud, Willy Caballero.
This isn’t to disparage Richarlison. He is a powerful runner and clever with the ball at his feet, but to view him as an improvement on what United currently have going forward is just wrong. The winger has not scored in five months.
Mourinho will need to be far more ambitious and, of course, focus on midfield and defence instead.
