Anthony Martial will seek guarantees over his Manchester United future from Jose Mourinho after growing disillusioned about his recent lack of minutes, according to reports.
The Frenchman enjoyed a superb first half of the season, winning three ‘Player of the Month’ awards, but has only made two Premier League starts since the arrival of Alexis Sanchez in January.
Reliable media outlet RMC Sport claimed on Tuesday afternoon that Martial had set his sights on leaving the club after growing exasperated at a lack of opportunities under Mourinho.
And according to the Times’ Paul Hirst, the 22-year-old, whose current deal expires in 2019, has been offered a five-year contract but will not sign it until Mourinho guarantees he will play more often.
There are now a number of conflicting reports about Martial.
The Independent‘s Miguel Delaney, for example, has gone against RMC’s claim that Martial wants out, noting that his first choice is still United but that Mourinho, in contrast with what he has said publicly, wants to render him surplus to requirements by further investing in his attack over the summer.
And now we have the Times claiming that Martial is taking a diplomatic approach to his situation by talking with Mourinho but adding very little else.
What this smells like, to me at least, is the winger’s agent posturing for improved terms on his current deal and greater recognition of his client’s talent amid the club’s hierarchy. These two reports, on the other hand, could may well be totally unsubstantiated and simply piggybacking on the RMC story.
