Jose Mourinho has described his Manchester United players as “masters of complication” after a woeful 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion.
The Portuguese boss was frustrated by his team’s inability to play simple football in hope of breaking down a solid, deep and narrow West Brom defence.
Man United created little, wasted the ball and allowed West Brom to score from a set piece before defending their lead until the final whistle. The result gives the Premier League title to Manchester City.
“I think we were deservedly punished because we were masters in complication,” Mourinho said, throwing his players under the bus.
“Everything was complicated. Players didn’t want or couldn’t play simple. Everything was slow or one more touch, one more flick, one more turn, and ball lost.”
Mourinho said that kind of football meant United couldn’t build a rhythm and make the game hard for West Brom.
“No continuity, and no fluidity in our football,” Mourinho continued.
“I don’t think we deserve to lose but we gave them the opportunity to win the match by [them] being solid in defence and smelling a chance in a set play which they did.”
It’s been a weakness in this United side for some time now, and not just under Mourinho. However, given he started players like Juan Mata and Alexis Sanchez over Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial, it’s unsurprising United lacked pace in the side.
