Jose Mourinho has slammed his Manchester United players’ attitudes in a 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion.
The Portuguese was hugely critical of the naivety of his players in overly celebrating a dramatic 3-2 victory in the Manchester derby last week.
Mourinho claimed the result and subsequent celebrations affected his players’ performances in a woeful display against bottom-of-the-league West Brom.
“I know them. I smell [a problem],” Mourinho told Sky Sports post-match.
“I have lots of experience. And that’s not me [losing my head after a win]. I won 8 titles.
“I’m not in the moon because I won against Manchester City, a match that is only 3 points. I saw lots of people [players] in the moon because we won against Manchester City like to win against Manchester City was the most important thing of the season.”
Mourinho said he could see the weakness of his players mentally all week throughout training and tried to prevent it, but clearly couldn’t.
“All week I was fighting against that,” he continued. You could see the attitudes of some players, masters of complication. Stylish, one more trick, one more touch.”
United had no speed about their game, and very little drive. Everything was laborious, and often over-the-top, as Mourinho constantly emphasised with his “masters of complications” quote.
It’s up to Mourinho to make sure that never happens again. It was just, as he said, a win against Man City. There was no trophy for it. The players should have let it be a boost, not an eventual hindrance.
