Chelsea’s defensive troubles throughout the season have been well publicised, with Antonio Conte’s men struggling to shut teams out in recent times.
A number of central defenders have been linked with moves to Stamford Bridge and one name that has been thrown around a lot has been Toby Alderweireld, whose situation at Tottenham Hotspur is becoming increasingly scrutinised.
The Belgian international is at an impasse with Tottenham over negotiations regarding a new contract at the club, which could lead to the player departing the club in the summer transfer window.
A host of top clubs have been linked with moves for Alderweireld and this certainly includes Chelsea. Tottenham want to retain the ex-Southampton loan star’s services but face an uphill battle, with Alderweireld not budging on his wage demands.
This appears to have led Spurs to make contingency plans ahead of the player’s potential departure. According to Calciomercato, Sevilla centre-back Clement Lenglet has been lined up.
The Frenchman has been in good form in La Liga this season and caught the eye of many, including those at Barcelona.
Spurs will be desperate to keep hold of Alderweireld for the foreseeable future but it could prove to be tough, with both Chelsea and Manchester United having been heavily linked with respective moves for the centre-back.
