Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s doctor has explained why the striker signed a contract extension at Manchester United before leaving a few months later.
The Swedish talisman signed for MLS side LA Galaxy in the USA last week after a successful 18-month spell in Manchester.
Ibrahimovic lifted the EFL Cup and UEFA Europa League with a 28-goal haul last season before injury in April 2017 effectively ended his Man United career.
Despite that injury, Ibrahimovic signed a new deal in the summer, but chose to leave before the end of this season.
His doctor, Freddy Fu, revealed that Ibrahimovic staying at United was dependent on the Reds’ efforts in the UEFA Champions League.
“His idea was to try to go again and win more titles, especially the Champions League,” Fu said, via Expressen.
“When United went out, I think he felt that it was enough. They may be able to win the FA Cup, which is good, but not as important as the UCL.”
Effectively then, Ibrahimovic wanted a final tilt at European silverware before seeing out the final years of his career in sunny Los Angeles. After two decades at the top level of continental football, that’s fair enough.
Having been on a lower wage contract than in his first season at the club due to the ligament damage he was recovering from, United didn’t lose too much from handing Ibrahimovic a new deal even after knowledge of serious blow.
United suffered a humiliatingly poor 2-1 defeat to La Liga side Sevilla to crash out of European football in the round of 16. Though few expected Jose Mourinho’s side to win it, a better performance than that was expected.
Going out was one thing, but the manner of the performance was even worse. Ibrahimovic has gone now, but United moved on some time ago with the brilliance of summer signing Romelu Lukaku.
