Arsene Wenger has revealed why he dropped Aaron Ramsey and a couple of other regular starters in Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton (via Arsenal.com).
There was a lot of confusion and surprise from Arsenal fans once the starting lineup was announced for the Gunners’ match against Brighton on Sunday.
Regular starters like Hector Bellerin and Aaron Ramsey were both dropped from the lineup and now, Arsene Wenger has explained his decision to drop the Welshman altogether.
“I left him at home because I played him in the two games against City, without a lot of training in behind,” the Frenchman said after the match.
“I didn’t want to gamble today for a physical setback, so I left him completely out of the squad.”
Arsenal, of course, take on AC Milan in the Europa League on Thursday and Wenger was asked if his decision to rest the Welshman was because of the importance of the match.
“Yes because we have to be realistic. We need two teams to collapse [in the Premier League]. I can’t see that at the moment because two teams to drop so many points is very difficult to imagine.
“But we have to give our best for as long as we can. Of course, the Europa League becomes important.”
Thursday’s fixture against AC Milan is a hugely important match for Arsenal. The Gunners will almost definitely finish outside the top four and the importance of Champions League football cannot be understated.
