Phil Thompson has claimed that Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United should be doing better in his second season in charge given the money they’ve spent on transfers.
The pundit is actually one of a few people in the media to actually credit the Portuguese manager with making progress with the rest of the mainstream setting an agenda against him.
Whilst most United fans are displeased with the occasionally dire football on display, they understand that it’s mostly the players’ faults and not Mourinho’s.
Most of the supporters don’t wish to see the former Chelsea man leave at the end of the season and would prefer to wait for an additional season before calling for anyone’s head.
However, Jose certainly has a lot of pressure on his shoulders to deliver the title next campaign and Thompson believes there should be more to come.
According to the Sport Review, Phil said to Sky Sports: “I would say yes they are making progress, but not greatly, especially for the money spent to assemble it.
“I can’t say Mourinho has really turned this around and they should be doing better all considered. We can’t forget he won two trophies last season and has a chance at winning the FA Cup this campaign, while the style of football has changed since Louis van Gaal and is a bit better watch.
“But I don’t think it is the Manchester United way still. If you get results, everyone is happy. But if they don’t get those results, the questions will come, although he is the best in the world at deflecting the tension.”
In Jose Mourinho’s first season he managed to win the Europa League and Carabao Cup as well as the season opener in the Community Shield.
The trophies set him up well for his second campaign and it appeared as though Manchester United may actually win the title.
Going head to head with Manchester City in the early weeks as well as blowing teams away with 4-0 results, things looked bright initially.
However, inconsistencies set in and expectations had to be readjusted, especially given how United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup and Champions League.
Now winning the FA Cup and a second placed finish in the league would be seen as a decent season but Mourinho will have plenty to prove on his third try.
