Charlie Nicholas has made the rather bold claim that Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United have not improved this season.
The Portuguese manager has come in for a huge chunk of criticism of late, mostly for his man management of stars Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw but also due to the club’s knockout of the Champions League by Sevilla.
United were never expected to go too far in the competition but when paired with the Spanish side, most saw the opportunity to advance even further.
However, Mourinho’s men failed to show up against the La Liga side and he was then criticised for not just the poor football on the day but for his overall football quality with the club.
Nicholas appears to be on the side of those who believe that the former Chelsea manager’s squad have been static this season.
According to the Sport Review, Charlie said to Sky Sports: “The answer this season is a big no [whether Man Utd have improved this season or not]. How they sit in the Premier League is much improved, but they’ve spent an absolute fortune to do that.
“They won two trophies last season and they’ll be lucky to get one this year.”
The pundit’s claim is a rather bizarre one considering how he contradicts himself in almost the same sentence as he admits that the Red Devils’ have improved their league standing this season.
That in and of itself should be an indicator for progress but the fans’ frustrations with the club’s performances in the cup competitions is certainly understandable.
Manchester United were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup earlier in the season and now only have the FA Cup to look forward to for their only piece of silverware this season.
After ending the season in 6th place last campaign, finishing this season in the Champions League spots is definitely progress but Jose Mourinho certainly has a lot of pressure to deliver the Premier League title next season.
