Napoli superstar explains why he doesn't want to play for Jose Mourinho

Manchester United target and Napoli midfielder Jorginho has implied that Jose Mourinho’s tactical set-up would not suit him should he decide to leave over the summer.

The 55-year-old has set his sights on adding midfield reinforcements over the transfer window ahead of Michael Carrick‘s retirement and Marouane Fellaini‘s departure.

And Jorginho, who has spoken effusively of the Premier League in the past, is reportedly being lined up as a potential target.

Speaking soon after Italy’s 1-1 draw with England, Jorginho implied that he wanted to play in a system that radically differs from what supporters have seen at Old Trafford this season.

“I think that I could fit (in the Premier League),” he said. “It depends on who else is around me – I need players with the same characteristics that I have.”

“There are English teams with this style of play, ball on the ground, quick transitions, high pressure. If one of those teams wanted me, I could fit and the other way round. My football way is not an usual one.”

What Jorginho is saying here, in effect, is that Mourinho’s way of playing does not allow for midfielders to flourish – and you can hardly argue with that.

Mourinho does not necessarily bank on his midfielders to act as springboards for attacks like Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri, whose use of triangles and building up the pitch in rapid phases gives players like Jorginho freedom to express themselves.

At Old Trafford, however, midfielders are there to add structure first and innovation second. Taking up the right position is the most important thing for Mourinho, who wants his side spend less time moving the ball around and place greater emphasis and finding the right position to supply, as he has called it before, the ‘killer pass’.

As a result, United have lost out on one of Europe’s best midfielders ahead of the summer.
