David de Gea 5 – Helpless for the home side’s first goal but found himself once again beaten at the near post for their second. Needs to work on that area of his game.
Antonio Valencia 7 – The only player in the first half to show initiative. Continued to press forward with intent after the break and claimed an assist for Chris Smalling.
Chris Smalling 5 – Once again, two horrible mistakes revealed in glowing terms why Manchester United need Eric Bailly on the pitch. Too flimsy for Crystal Palace’s first and simply asleep for their second.
Victor Lindelof 6 – Occasionally struggled with the muscle of Christian Benteke up front but generally handled the ball well. His positioning seems to be improving.
Ashley Young 5 – Epitomised Man United’s frustrating stagnancy for most of the game, unable to move forward in any productive manner and too often caught out by Palace’s speed.
Nemanja Matic 7 – Found himself occupied by Alexander Sørloth, Palace’s second striker, during the opening stages but had more of an influence as the game went on. And then, oh my god, what a goal.
Scott McTominay 4 – Never got into the game, which simply seemed too fast for him. A harsh lesson of life at the top following a week in the spotlight.
Paul Pogba 6 – Frustrating in the first half; the prime instigator of a fightback in the second. Nothing seemed to be going right for him but the Frenchman persisted and eventually dominated the midfield battle.
Jesse Lingard 6 – Didn’t manage to find any space early on but broke through the lines with pace and precision whenever he could. The introduction of Marcus Rashford seemed to galvanise him.
Alexis Sanchez 6 – The Chilean can frustrate at times on the ball but his refusal to lie down played an important part in United’s comeback towards the end.
Romeu Lukaku 6 – Couldn’t find space in the channels or even touch the ball for most of the game, but when his chance came he took it superbly.
Substitutes
Marcus Ashford 7 – Came on at half time and immediately changed the look of the game, bringing United up the pitch in a way no other player could in the first half.
