Jose Mourinho has put fears to bed that Marcus Rashford’s development will be allowed to stagnate at Manchester United.
The Portuguese outlined his love for the young English striker, who he has shown great trust in since he took over at Old Trafford in July 2016, months after Rashford broke into the side with two consecutive doubles in his first two games for the club.
Rashford has featured in 38 of Man United’s 42 games this season, starting 20 of those games and netting 10 goals. He’s already close to his highest season tally of 11 which he hit last campaign.
This season, Rashford has played almost entirely on the left flank due to the summer arrival of Romelu Lukaku for £75m. Mourinho hailed the versatility of the youngster.
“The good thing with Marcus is he can play in the three attacking positions so, even when he doesn’t start, to be on the bench is such a security for me and for the team,” Mourinho explained.
“Marcus is a fantastic boy. He is also very grounded and, for sure, we love him, and we believe in him and he’s going to have the chances to keep developing.”
Mourinho has often tried to temper expectations of fans and pundits of Rashford. It’s been a sensible move, with no player able to continue in the form that Rashford was in at the very start of his career, which rocketed him to global fame instantly.
“Because Marcus had such an impact in the beginning, probably people are expecting him to play even more than he does and score even more than he does and to perform even more than he does,” Mourinho said. “But that’s not so simple.
“At his age, what he’s doing is more than enough, and the experience that he’s getting at every level is more than enough, for us to be happy with what we think is going to be his future.”
Rashford is developing as an all-round player fantastically. His strength, decision-making and non-goalscoring contribution have all improved under Mourinho, while he’s still hitting goals with good regularity.
Recently, he’s been in a goal drought, and hopefully he can wrestle himself out of that soon enough.
