Jose Mourinho’s treatment of Luke Shaw has only made the Manchester United youngster’s decline in performances more extreme, according to Graeme Le Saux.
It looks unlikely that Shaw will be in action for his country at this summer’s FIFA 2018 World Cup in Russia given a lack of appearances for Man United.
A former England left-back himself, Le Saux has criticised Mourinho for the damage he has done to Shaw.
The Portuguese manager has publicly criticised his young left-back on a number of occasions, most recently after he brought Shaw off at half-time in the Reds’ FA Cup quarter-final against Brighton & Hove Albion.
“Shaw was at United before Mourinho, but since the manager’s arrival, not only has Shaw not got better, he’s lost confidence and has that fear of making mistakes that comes when you feel under immense pressure,” Le Saux said, speaking to Betfair.
“The fact he’s not getting backed up by his manager only makes it harder.”
Ultimately, players react differently to criticism, and some require a different approach.
Mourinho is right to be displeased with Shaw’s performances, and potentially also unhappy with his attitude. There have been many other managers and coaches who have been critical of Shaw’s attitude, including those who have been supporters of him.
Perhaps Shaw needs words of his encouragement rather than criticism, and Le Saux believes any negative words should be kept private.
“During my career, managers would protect players in public and then let rip in the dressing room behind closed doors if needed,” he continued.
“If you played badly you knew you would get a hard time from the manager, but very rarely would that happen in public and I just don’t understand what Mourinho is trying to achieve from that.”
