Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is keen to bring in Scottish Premiership star Kieran Tierney in.
The Portuguese is looking for a new long-term starting left-back given Ashley Young’s age and Luke Shaw’s inability to earn Mourinho’s trust, according to Duncan Castles.
20-year-old Tierney is one of the names on Mourinho’s radar despite signing a new six-year deal at Celtic, the club he supports and has played for all his life, in October.
Given the Scottish champions’ financial situation in comparison to some other clubs, Tierney could likely be brought in by United for around £20m, rather than paying a fee in excess of £50m for another of Europe’s best full-backs.
Tierney is seen by United scouts as a less pricey option than Juventus’ Alex Sandro. The Brazilian remains Mourinho’s number one target, but the Serie A side will demand more than €70m.
The Scottish international has been hugely impressive so far in his Celtic and Scotland career, and is still yet to turn 21.
He has captained both club and country despite his young age and Mourinho reportedly notes his ability to play at both left-back and right-back and in a three-man defence.
Whether it is Tierney or Sandro or someone else that Mourinho brings in this summer, one thing that seems certain is that Luke Shaw will leave the club and Young will no longer be first-choice left-back.
It’s a position that has troubled United ever since Patrice Evra left. Getting it sorted would be fantastic.
