Jose Mourinho has hit out at Manchester United’s “childish” defending during their 3-2 win over Crystal Palace on Monday night.
Chris Smalling‘s failure to show Christian Benteke down the line allowed for the Belgian to set up Andros Townsend after 11 minutes.
And things got worse for Man United just after half time when a complete lack of concentration from the entire back four saved the way for Patrick van Aanholt to fire past David de Gea.
United fought back brilliantly to win the game, with Nemanja Matic thundering home an injury time winner, but Mourinho was quick to note that he was far from pleased with the way his side defended.
“We played very good quality football in the second half but we made so many defensive mistakes,” he said.
“I don’t like my teams to lose their organisation like we did, but it was an amazing match and a very important win for us.”
“That disgraceful, childish second goal changed everything. But the players kept an amazing attitude.”
United fans will be quick to jump on Smalling’s back following another display which saw the Englishman’s propensity for simple mistakes play a role in the opposition scoring – this time twice – but for 50 minutes Mourinho’s problems were far bigger than just one man.
As Palace, keeping it simple with a 4-4-2 and two big men up front, bludgeoned their way forward, bypassing the midfield with ease, you could sense an acute shakiness throughout the entire back four.
They looked frozen to the spot at times, seemingly overwhelmed by the tight pitch and noise and sheer speed of the home side, who were very good but hardly anything new.
And while they got away with it this time, Mourinho must know that adding some fresh zeal to the back over the summer is a necessary task.
