Former Man Utd manager discusses Mourinho tactics

Former Manchester United manager Ron Atkinson has been busy discussing Jose Mourinho and the current style of football that’s being played at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese boss has been criticised heavily this season for the way he has set up his players, particularly in big games.

The criticism has only come up of late as United struggled with form but not too many people had issues with it at the beginning of the season when Mourinho’s men were on fire.

Supporters knew what they were getting when the former Chelsea manager was employed- the football was never going to be pretty but he will deliver the club trophies.

Atkinson reiterates the above point, giving a nod to the manner in which the Red Devils rivals play but also believes the trophies will keep on coming.

According to Sport360, Ron said: “Jose is a results manager. Sometimes he will sacrifice a little bit of style for a pragmatic result. I do all United’s big games for television and that would be the thing leveled against him.

“The quality and style of play doesn’t come up to their expectations, particularly with how City are playing, Liverpool and Tottenham are playing. But he won two trophies last season and I think he’ll get one this year.”

In his first season at the club Jose won the Community Shield, EFL Cup and Europa League, though most fans don’t consider the first trophy to be a ‘real’ one.

The Europa League was certainly the biggest trophy as well as the most important one given the immense pressure for Manchester United to return to Champions League football.

In his second season things are finely poised for Jose Mourinho as things could go either way with the campaign either being considered a success or failure.

United were knocked out of the EFL Cup and are far behind in the Premier League but have made decent progress in the Champions League and FA Cup.

A cup win and a second placed finish are likely to be considered as decent success but the real pressure will be on Mourinho’s third season where a title win will be expected.
