Former Manchester United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron has called on Jose Mourinho to give Juan Sebastian Veron greater freedom on the pitch.
The Chilean, who arrived from Arsenal in a swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan in January, has only managed one goal in his opening ten games.
He was dropped from the starting XI against Brighton and Hove Albion and admitted last week that he expected more of himself during the early stages of his Old Trafford career.
But Veron has noted that Sanchez would benefit enormously from Mourinho handing him a freer role going forward.
“These types of players don’t have to prove anything,” he said. “In order to see the best version of Alexis, one needs to have a little patience.”
“For me, [Sanchez] is a player that needs more freedom, because he moves everywhere in attack and also gives you a hand when stepping back.”
So far Sanchez has been an awkward, one-dimensional presence on the left-hand side, often level with the likes of Paul Pogba in midfield and almost always occupying the left channel area the Frenchman enjoys to exploit so much.
The result: Sanchez is nowhere near dangerous positions further forward and stifling Pogba’s momentum in the process.
Having had two weeks to dwell Mourinho needs to have come up with a better attacking formula. Perhaps allowing for Sanchez and Mata, both high up the pitch, to interchange across the right hand side and centre of the pitch would bring the former into the game more, menacingly roaming the final third like he has done so many times before, while Pogba has space to attack the left channel along with Anthony Martial, who simply needs to play.
