Arsene Wenger has explained his reasoning behind the £18 million deadline day sale of Olivier Giroud to London rivals, Chelsea (via Arsenal.com).
It was a signing which few fans from either club would’ve expected but Olivier Giroud swapped Arsenal for Chelsea on deadline day.
The 31-year-old striker made the £18 million move across London after almost six years at the Emirates.
Now, Arsene Wenger has explained the reason why he sanctioned the sale on the same day Arsenal announced the signing of a new striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
“Olivier wanted more playing time,” Wenger replied. “He has not played many Premier League games and he also wants to go to the World Cup.
“That’s why I opened the door when Aubameyang came in for him, to give him a chance to get the competition he deserves.”
Many Arsenal fans will wonder why Wenger made the move to directly strengthen a Premier League rival but the boss explained that too.
“It was very difficult from the family side for him to leave London.
“All this and the fact that we owe Olivier Giroud a lot. His commitment, his dedication and love for the club was absolutely exceptional.
“It was difficult to turn it down just because it was an opponent, a competitive club.”
So, it seems that it was more of a personal decision both from the club and the player himself. There are some obvious parallels between the Giroud deal and the transfer of Petr Cech just a few years ago. Olivier Giroud has been a fine servant for Arsenal – just as Cech was for Chelsea – which is why both clubs allowed these deals to happen.
