Scott McTominay has admitted he felt he had to prove himself when given the responsibility of marking Eden Hazard against Chelsea.
The young Manchester United midfielder was impressive for most of Sunday’s clash as the Reds finished 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Romelu Lukaku and substitute Jesse Lingard.
21-year-old McTominay has been hugely impressive in the last couple of weeks and established himself as a first-team regular thanks to injuries t Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera.
Though his role in the first goal for Chelsea was poor, McTominay was solid at Old Trafford in a good midfield performance from the Reds.
“You have to take it in your stride,” McTominay said of being asked to mark Hazard, taking up the role that Herrera was hailed for last season, “you need to prove to people you’re good enough. We started well. The second half we were completely in control.
“I’m fearless, and I just want to get on the pitch as much as I can now. They’ve got brilliant players all over the pitch but I think every one of us put in a massive shift today.”
McTominay certainly looks fearless. With great confidence, the Anglo-Scot is earning the trust of manager Jose Mourinho and has been hailed by the Portuguese in the media on a number of occasions now.
“When we went behind, we had to chase the game a bit. But in the second half we were completely in control,” McTominay said of the game.
“I’m really enjoying my football at the moment, it’s great to be playing in the Premier League and the Champions League regularly, but at the end of the day it’s a really good three points for the team.”
