Scott McTominay is hungry for “more and more” game time at the elite level of football with Manchester United after fulfilling a ‘dream’ by playing in the UEFA Champions League.
The Anglo-Scot made his 16th appearance for Man United on Wednesday night in a 0-0 draw against Sevilla. Composed and calm in possession, McTominay drew personal praise from manager Jose Mourinho who had had handed him his ninth start for the club.
Aged 21, McTominay is gaining fantastic experience this season and has earned the trust of Mourinho and made himself part of the manager’s long-term plans.
He was ecstatic to be playing in Europe’s biggest club competition.
“Yeah, I love it,” McTominay told reporters after the game in Seville.
“There’s nothing better than the Champions League is there? As a young boy growing up, it’s a dream, and just to be playing in these competitions is incredible.”
United return to Old Trafford needing any kind of wind to progress in the competition. They failed to get an away goal in Spain, but held out against the La Liga side with a cleansheet, partly down to the excellence of goalkeeper David de Gea, playing in his home country.
McTominay expressed his ambitions to continue playing at this level of football. It’s likely he’ll be given more chances in the competition given the trust Mourinho has clearly developed for him and the backing the Portuguese has given his young midfielder.
“I want more and more in my career,” McTominay said, “and hopefully we can keep going [in the Champions League].”
