David de Gea has been handed the UEFA Champions League ‘Player of the Week’ award following his superb performance against Sevilla on Wednesday night.
The Spaniard crucially kept Manchester United level before half time with a couple of superb saves from Steven N’Zonzi and Luis Muriel headers.
His save from the latter’s effort – a point blanc bullet header – drew gasps from the watching world and deflated Sevilla’s attack from thereafter.
And the keeper, once again hailed as the best in the world in the aftermath, has been declared the Champions League ‘Player of the Week’ as a result.

There are aspects of De Gea’s game that can improve, of course. His kicking, for example, could become more accurate, and defenders would appreciate a greater willingness to come out and gather loose balls – something the Spaniard has always been reluctant to do.
But his display on Wednesday night reaffirmed one clear fact: that nobody in world football is better at saving shots than De Gea. The way in which he gets to seemingly unstoppable drives, using either his feet or hands like some kind of supersonic panther, eclipses any other keeper in terms of the capacity to thrill, to amaze, to boggle the mind.
He will certainly need to be at his best once again for the return leg, where a Sevilla goal could prove fatal.
