Anthony Martial remains at odds with Manchester United over a new contract at the club after a lack of progress in discussions in recent weeks.
The Frenchman’s current deal expires in the summer of 2019, though due to a clause in the contract allowing Man United to trigger a one-year extension (until 2020), there is no significant rush or panic to tie up Martial.
However, there is a need to offer Martial new terms to secure his long-term future, put to bed worries over his future and make sure the young forward feels valued.
RMC Sport, a French outlet, report that Martial’s agent met with United representatives in December but the expected offer of a new deal has not been forthcoming since.
Despite no rush to get something signed, Martial is mystified by the lack of movement and feels that the ‘lack of recognition’ of his importance will make him consider his future at Old Trafford.
RMC suggest that Martial has halted the process of buying a house in Manchester, and that Tottenham Hotspur and Mauricio Pochettino are considering a move for the 22-year-old striker, as ell as Serie A club Inter Milan.
There was reported interest from Spurs last summer, too. United should do their best to ensure Martial doesn’t become frustrated by the situation. Alexis Sanchez’s arrival may have disrupted talks, but the club should now look to get Martial tied down to a new long-term deal given his obvious ability and huge potential.
