Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha has insisted that Romelu Lukaku can do more under Jose Mourinho this season.
The 24-year-old, who arrived over the summer for £75m, made a storming start to life at Old Trafford with 11 goals in ten games.
But then encountered a drought following Paul Pogba’s injury, managing just one goal in 11 games, but has since taken his tally for this season up to 17 in all competitions.
Speaking to Reuters, Saha noted that the Belgian can still improve at Man United.
“He started well, we can see that he has got more in him,“ he said. ”We want to see him rip apart some defenders because he can do it.”
”Physically he’s so strong. I will say that he can do more but that’s easy to say. Sometimes Lukaku might not be helped with Mourinho’s style of play.
“I wish next season maybe, with one year under his belt, he’ll be even more consistent.”
If you still care about the imagined tripartite battle between rival fans over which striker out of Lukaku, Alvaro Morata and Alexandre Lacazette is the best (which I definitely don’t), the United man is winning – five goals ahead of the Spaniard while Arsenal’s £50m man hasn’t even reached double figures yet.
The Belgian has frustrated at times this season but his output, especially for a first season at a big club, has been solid. 17 goals at this stage of the campaign is nothing to scoff at and, crucially, his build up play has significantly improved – something seen with his superb assist for Anthony Martial against Burnley.
He is still familiarising himself with teammates and the general task of being United’s No.9, but the early signs suggest he’ll only improve as time goes on.
