David de Gea 6 – Gathered a series of routine early drives but didn’t have any major saves to make.
Antonio Valencia 6 – Kept his side of the pitch tight and moved the ball along with precision. Failed to have an impact going forward.
Phil Jones 7 – Another combative, tidy display from the Englishman. Timed his challenges well and looked assured in his positioning for the most part.
Chris Smalling 6 – Found himself caught on the ball occasionally in the first half but managed to provide a stronger physical presence as the game went on.
Ashley Young 6 – Another workmanlike display on the left. Handled the ball well and battled hard with Steven Defour, but couldn’t have his usual impact going forward, wasting a good chance in the first half.
Nemanja Matic 6.5 – A quietly efficient performance from the 29-year-old: broke up play in the middle and recycled the ball all afternoon after a difficult start.
Paul Pogba 6 – Roamed the pitch with his usual drive and zeal, but struggled to produce the same level of quality seen against Stoke City. Made too many unnecessary fouls.
Juan Mata 5 – Never even looked like having an effect on the game. Too slow, too ponderous, and devoid of cutting edge – somewhat highlighting the need for Alexis Sanchez.
Jesse Lingard 5 – Brought his characteristic energy to the table but hardly ever troubled Burnley’s back four, seemingly unable to link up with teammates.
Anthony Martial 6 – Didn’t have any impact on proceedings in the first half but once again provided the decisive touch to put the visitors ahead, firing home off the bar in emphatic fashion,
Romeu Lukaku 7 – Fed off scraps for most of the game yet still looked more dangerous than any attacking player, holding up play magnificently and forging Martial’s goal out of nothing.
