Real Madrid have made contact with David de Gea‘s agent Jorges Mendes ahead of a potential move to the Bernabeu over the summer transfer window, according to reports.
The Spaniard famously came close to joining Los Blancos on deadline day back in 2015, only for a certain fax machine to pull the plug on the entire deal.
De Gea went on to sign a new contract at Old Trafford and has since asserted himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, receiving the occasional smatter of interest from Madrid but nothing ever particularly concrete.
But according to Spanish media outlet Cadena SER, Madrid have reestablished contact with Mendes after their main target between the sticks Kepa Arrizabalaga signed a new contract with Athletic Bilbao, culminating in his release clause standing at €80m.
So, here we are again.
We have to accept at this point that Madrid, kind of like prison, never really leaves you once its claws sink in. Their nightmare season continued with a 2-1 home defeat to Leganes last night and preparations for the summer – which will undoubtedly witness the arrival of a new manager – are already beginning, and De Gea is one of the main targets.
One can only hope that the above notion is wrong. De Gea will always be a target, of course, but perhaps Madrid’s malaise this season warrants big investment in other areas first, giving United a chance to make any move for their prized keeper as difficult as possible.
