Manchester United are reportedly set to reignite their interest in Paris Saint-Germain forward Lucas Moura.
The Brazilian was involved in a long transfer saga linking him to Man United back in the Sir Alex Ferguson-era, at a similar time to Eden Hazard’s move to Chelsea when he rejected the Reds for the then-European Champions. Moura joined PSG from Sao Paolo in 2012 for a huge £38m. United baulked at such an enormous fee.
But now, Jose Mourinho is willing to go back in for Moura. The 25-year-old is free to leave the French giants during January having fallen well down the pecking order after numerous arrivals in consecutive summers, including, of course, the record-breaking signings of Neymar from FC Barcelona and Kylian Mbappe from AS Monaco.
The Daily Telegraph report that United have a “strong interest” in signing Moura. A player of his quality is rarely available in the January transfer window, and that’s perhaps part of United’s thinkings. Mourinho is now “pushing hard for a winger” to be recruited this month, having previously complained about United missing out on their fourth target of last summer, Ivan Perisic of Inter Milan.
The Portuguese boss is also targeting Bordeaux’s Brazilian winger Malcolm, a countryman of Moura’s, but five years younger.
United have undoubtedly needed a genuine winger this season. Playing Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford, two strikers, on the left flank has worked at times, but not always. On the right, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata have both been underwhelming and Mourinho has no option on that wing.
However, whether Moura is the right man, having failed to fulfil his £38m potential at PSG in his five years and 200+ appearances there, is another question. His big selling point is that he’s available in January, and that’s not the right reason to spend significant amounts of money on a player.
