Manchester United are targeting two full-backs and an attacking midfielder in the January transfer window.
The Daily Mail suggest Man United will go on a rare winter spending spree, having rarely utilised the mid-season window for more than one major signing.
Manager Jose Mourinho wants to strengthen his squad for the final five months of the season with some obvious weaknesses in the side in the first half of the campaign.
The United board will reportedly fully support Mourinho in the transfer market having been sympathetic to the view that he inherited a worse squad than Pep Guardiola across the city at local title rivals Manchester City.
Mourinho’s United lie 15 points behind their ‘noisy neighbours’ who are running away with the title as the Reds sit in third.
The club’s officials have told agents that they’re looking for a left-back, right-back and attacking midfielder and want to sign all three by the end of January.
Luke Shaw, who was signed for a then-record £27m from Southampton in 2014, has recently come back into the side under Mourinho, having been frozen out previously. He’s impressed and is improving with each game on the left flank. Many United fans retain hope that he will be the long-term first-choice left-back at the club.
Young Fulham left-back Ryan Sessegnon has been linked to United on a number of occasions.
Antonio Valencia is vice-captain at right-back but is currently injured and United need more depth in a position where their first-choice is a converted winger, second choice is also a converted winger and third and fourth choices are all centre-backs.
In attacking midfield, Henrikh Mkhitaryan could leave this month, linked with a return to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga after falling well down the pecking order since November. Mourinho’s other two options are Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata.
Lingard has come into his own in the last six weeks, scoring seven goals in his last nine games and being one of the most in-form players in the Premier League. His movement is fantastic, he has the work rate to match it, but United do need more quality in that area, even if Lingard is to keep his starting spot that he deservedly has at the moment.
