Manchester United handed Angel Gomes one of their biggest ever contracts for a youth player to keep him at Old Trafford last month, according to reports.
The 17-year-old rose to prominence last season when he claimed the ‘Jimmy Murphy Youth Player of the Year’ award before making his senior debut against Crystal Palace.
And Gomes, amid interest from Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund, signed his first professional contract with the club last month.
According to the Sun‘s Daniel Cutts, Man United dished out a package worth £25,000 – almost unprecedented for youth player – a week to secure his long-term commitment to the cause.
The rag reporting this will have gone with the young-black-player-getting-too-much-money angle in their delivery of this piece, but I would like to take it in a different direction.
Of course, the idea of being 17 and having £25,000 to spend every week would be intoxicating to say the least, and that’s because most of us were just regular 17-year-olds.
But Gomes does not fit into this category. Even at such a young age, the playmaker has been earmarked as the focal point of United’s next generation of young talents. Nicky Butt and Kieran McKenna have made a point of giving the Englishman more responsibility on the pitch, honing not just his skills on the ball but also his capacity to act as a director of attacking movements.
And this humungous paycheque, you sense, falls under the umbrella of the same method – to get Gomes to grow up fast, take responsibility, and player like the star that his income implies.
