Jose Mourinho has revealed that one of the reasons he accepted a contract extension at Manchester United was due to his strong relationship with the players.
The Portuguese signed a new deal on Thursday evening that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2020.
If he sees out the full length of that contract, this will be his longest single stint at any club in his career. Mourinho said he was thankful to the board for having faith in him to complete the job of restoring United to their former-glory.
“This is the tradition of United,” Mourinho told MUTV. “To give confidence in the managers. They believe they can take the team to the places where the history of the club deserves. Club nowadays change their managers too much. That’s not good for the evolution of the players.”
Having almost completed four transfer windows as United boss, Mourinho’s squad is starting to resemble Mourinho. Though he guided the Reds to EFL Cup and UEFA Europa League glory in his first campaign, the side being played was a hodge-podge of the payers and ideas of Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Mourinho.
Though many players from previous managers remain in Mourinho’s thinking, it’s now his squad. And he says his relationship with them was a key factor in agreeing to a new deal.
“One of the reasons I’m staying is because of the players,” Mourinho said. “My relationship with them is really good. I really enjoy working with them. The human side of them, good players, There’s an evolution in their mentality.
“I feel like the privileged one to work with such a fantastic group. Between them they stick together in good and bad moments.
“The history and tradition of the club, the moment I arrived, there was a big gap between the team and the tradition and history and ambitions of United. The owners will never stop until they reach where they want to go, which is success.
“I learned what Manchester United is as an opponent, the meaning, the dimension, the history, now the pride to work for such a big club.”
