Jose Mourinho has insisted that he doesn’t know whether Manchester United will look to sign players over the January transfer window.
Man United have lost sight of Manchester City over December following defeat to Pep Guardiola’s side and draws with Leicester City, Burnley and Southampton.
Injuries to key players such as Marouane Fellaini, Eric Bailly, Michael Carrick, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku has intensified the need for added personnel in recent times.
But Mourinho, speaking after United’s 2-0 win at Goodison Park on Monday, refused to reveal if he would wait for the summer to make additions to his squad.
“I don’t know,” he said. “Honestly, I know that in this moment we are in trouble, maybe in 2-3 weeks we recover some players. Can we improve our team now or wait until the summer is something I cannot say.”
The 54-year-old clearly wants to make additions to his squad but you sense in his tone a lack of belief in the club’s hierarchy to secure the targets he wants over January – a period he has been notably sceptical of in the past.
Where his priorities lie is something of a mystery. Luke Shaw‘s recent resurgence has quietened call for a new left-back but Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s continued poor form may convince the manager to go all out for a creative nucleus over the next month.
