Manchester United and Jose Mourinho are in the process of talks over an extension to his current contract at the club.
Reports this week have highlighted frustrations between Mourinho and the board at the club. The manager vented his concerns that he has been given less support in the transfer market financially than his rival Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
The board were disappointed with Mourinho’s comments in public, particularly given he has spent over £260m since joining in July 2016. Simultaneously, reports emanated of a worry that Mourinho could resign at the end of the season with the 54-year-old spending less and less time in Manchester.
Man United officials, though, are confident that Mourinho wants to stay at the club after the Portuguese’s ‘eagerness to discuss a contract extension over the past month’, James Ducker of the Telegraph reports.
Mourinho will soon move into the final year of his existing £12m-a-year three-year contract that he signed in 2016. United are keen to secure Mourinho’s long-term future after being impressed with the improvements made in comparison to the tenures of David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.
His contract may simply be extended by one-year to June 2020 as he looks to continue rebuilding a squad and a football club that remains in transition, a tumultuous one, after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
