Jose Mourinho hailed Manchester United’s effort in a 2-0 win against Everton despite a tough festive schedule.
Anthony Martial started up front in the absence of Romelu Lukaku due to injury and scored a wonderfully composed finish before Jesse Lingard trumped that goal with an even better one to seal the victory.
Mourinho was delighted with his players’ performance despite the Reds looking short of ideas in the first half at Goodison Park.
“Our pride, our effort, everything was top class and on top of it we played very well,” Mourinho said.
“It wasn’t a performance of tired boys, with the worst possible calendar that you gave us,” he continued, referencing the fact that United are one of a number of teams who have the least amount of rest days between games during the Christmas period.
“Everton had a reaction for five, eight minutes, but we were always in control,” the Portuguese explained.
“We changed our profile because we didn’t have Romelu Lukaku and I am really pleased.”
Mourinho will have been impressed with Martial’s performance. He was a nuisance and his finish for United’s opening goal was superb, directed perfectly into the top right corner.
United changed formation to adjust to temporary life without £75m Lukaku, moving to a 4-3-3 and looked much better in terms of movement in the second half.
