Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Romelu Lukaku has fully recovered from a head injury and will be available to start against Derby County on Friday night.
The Belgian suffered a nasty clash of heads with Wesley Hoedt during the 0-0 draw with Southampton and came off on a stretcher, with his boss later noting he could be out for a while.
But Mourinho revealed at Goodison Park that Lukaku had recovered quickly and actually asked to play against his former employers, only to be left out as a precautionary measure.
And the 54-year-old has told MUTV that the striker didn’t suffer a concussion as initially feared and would be available on Friday.
“Romelu is back,” he said. “It was not a concussion; it was a precaution, a protection for him. He wanted to play against Everton, but this time he is back.”
The clash with Hoedt looked serious. What concerned many was, firstly, how he was hit on the back of his head (the soft part) and, secondly, the vacant expression in his eyes as he lay there – a clear sign, it seemed, of a nasty concussion.
But it takes a lot more to keep Lukaku, described as a “monster” by Mourinho, away from the action for too long, and supporters will hope to see him make a return to the goals against the Championship side.
