Jose Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes was in Manchester on Wednesday to discuss the final details of a new contract for the Manchester United manager.
Suggestions of Mourinho extending his current deal at the club have been raised in the past fortnight, and it appears the Portuguese is now close to signing a new contract
As things stand, Mourinho is under contract at United until the end of next season, the 2018/19 campaign. He is reportedly keen to commit his long-term future to the club and, according to Neil Ashton, is determined that his job at Old Trafford will not be done until United are returned to top.
United’s owners, the Glazers, and Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward, who is in charge of most matters at the top level of both the football club and the commercial side, are convinced Mourinho will deliver sustained success.
The Telegraph report that Mendes went through the final details in an extension that will keep Mourinho at United until June 2021, with an option of a further 12 month-extension. United could announce the deal as soon as the end of this week, they report.
Simultaneously, Mendes may also have been considering a new deal for goalkeeper David de Gea, who he also represents. Mourinho recently outlined United’s intentions to secure the long-term future of the Spanish goalkeeper, whose deal expires at the end of the 2018/19 season (though there is an option of a one-year extension), and is perennially linked to Real Madrid.
