Former Chelsea captain Dennis Wise thinks that the reigning Premier League champions should not be looking to sign Andy Carroll this month as he will only bring more problems than solutions.
The Blues have been linked with a move for the West Ham forward, with reports suggesting that they could pay up to £20million to sign him.
However, Wise thinks that the club should be looking elsewhere. Speaking on Sky Sports show The Debate, he said that the club should be looking at other options.
He said:
He is a handful on his day, he really is, but no I do not think he is (the answer for Chelsea) to be honest. The reason being is he does not play enough games, he has had a lot of injuries. He is 29 years old and does not score enough goals and so therefore, from that point of view, no. I think Chelsea like a striker who runs in behind and stretches teams and he will not be that person if they play with one up front, he will be more of a hold-up. There are more out there that score more goals, as they will get a lot of chances in play, and really push Morata and that is what he needs. Andy won’t push him as far because he will only play a certain amount of games and I think you want a player who is really going to push Morata, score goals and put him under pressure.
Antonio Conte tried to sign Fernando Llorente in the summer, so he is clearly interested in a target man and it looks like he has his sights set firmly on Carroll.
The player himself is desperate to be part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup this summer and he’ll be relishing the chance to move to Chelsea so the can prove himself at a higher level.
