Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier believes that the presence of Alexis Sanchez won’t change anything for Manchester United when the two sides meet on Wednesday night.
The club’s new No.7 arrived last week and produced a ‘Man of the Match’ performance against Yeovil Town, claiming two assists on his debut.
But his first real test will come on his first Premier League outing in a Man United shirt, which fittingly comes away to Mauricio Pochettino’s men at Wembley.
Speaking ahead of the game, Dier was quick to insist that Sanchez’s presence would not change anything about the affair.
“The game as a whole won’t change because of one player. I don’t think [Sanchez’s Premier League bow for United] is going to make a difference,” he said.
“We all know the quality he has as a player but he’s going to add to a Man United squad that is already full of quality.
“It’s going to be a great game, a difficult game, but I don’t think one player changes a football match.”
I can see Dier’s logic here. Sanchez is, of course, just one of 22 players on the pitch. But he is hardly a player to play the bystander role – especially against a top six rival.
Mourinho, after all, signed him for that very reason. The Chilean’s compulsion to get on the ball and make things happen going forward outstrips almost anyone in the division, even when things aren’t going his way. There is only one mode in which Sanchez plays: overdrive.
And while that can often lead to losing the ball more than most, such a notion won’t matter if he decides games like he so often did at Arsenal.
