Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso has been nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month award for December.
As reported by Sky Sports, Alonso will face off against the likes of Harry Kane, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Jesse Lingard, Marko Arnautovic, Nicolas Otamendi and Riyad Mahrez.
Alonso is only one of two defenders to be named on the shortlist, alongside Manchester City’s Otamendi.
The Spaniard enjoyed a strong December, scoring twice and registering an assist during Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Huddersfield.
The 27-year-old also put in a Man of the Match performance against Southampton as the Premier League champions came out as 1-0 victors.
The defender has been a threat in the final third this season, scoring six times in the Premier League.
He started 2018 in a similar fashion, scoring Chelsea’s second in the 2-2 draw away from home against Arsenal on Wednesday night.
The award winner will be confirmed on January 12 as Alonso aims to become the first defender to win it this season.
