Antonio Conte and Roman Abramovich have suffered another strain to their relationship, with the Chelsea manager now on very thin ice at the club, according to an Express exclusive.
The Express reports that Abramovich is becoming increasingly irritated with his manager who has complained since the summer that he has no control over transfers and that he hasn’t been provided with the players he wants.
A source close to Abramovich said last night that he was “angry” and certainly “not happy” with Conte.
The Russian tycoon and the rest of the Chelsea hierarchy fully expect the Italian to walk away from the club at the end of the current campaign. However, with the Italian’s famed lack of patience becoming ever frustrating, things could unravel quicker than expected.
Paris Saint-Germain are said to be watching Conte’s situation carefully with their own coach Unai Emery expected to depart at the end of the season. The report claims that the Parisian club have already sounded out a deal with Conte’s people.
Many though expect Conte to return to Italy, with a potential return to the national team role a possibility after Gian Piero Ventura was sacked recently for failing to qualify for the World Cup finals.
Senior figures at the Italian Football Federation are keen to tempt Conte back to the job. He took Italy to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 and was popular with players and fans.
However, Conte would have to take a significant wage drop – over 50% – if he does return to the Italian national set-up. However, according to friends, he would rather do so than return to a club side in the Italian Serie A.
Some in the Chelsea hierarchy feel that with nearly £190m spent on new players last summer, and £15m already splashed out in this window on Ross Barkley, with another £52m likely to be outgoing with Emerson Palmieri on the way and Edin Dzeko’s arrival imminent this week, adequate funds have been made available to Conte.
There is also debate over whether Conte has been involved with transfer policy, with the club claiming they work down a list provided by the manager, which would be backed up by the recent arrivals of faces Conte has worked with before in Àlvaro Morata and Davide Zappacosta.
Former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique and former Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti are two names linked with replacing Conte.
